Font embedding in the future??

| Trackback | Permalink | August 10th, 2008

So if you know at least a little about html/webdesigning, you’d know there are a few ‘computer safe’ fonts that will work on every person’s computer - that is why almost all sites use a font family consisting of fonts like Georgia, Times New Roman, Arial and Helvetica. Well I don’t know if this is new news or not(apparently IE has supported embedded fonts since IE 4!!!) but I stumbled across this site yesterday which signaled the coming of ‘embeddable fonts’ - that is designers will be able to hopefully use more diverse and creative fonts for webpages. Apparnetly only Safari and Internet Explorer support this feature(surprise surprise) so Firefox and Opera have yet to implement this.

I personally think its an awesome, awesome idea - I’ve already checked out a demo page in my Safari browser and it is quite cool. Of course if you view it in FIrefox, all the fonts will look the same ol’ boring Helvetica :-P THe fonts used have an extension of EOT (Embedded Open Type) so look out for some of those in the future!

Anyhow if you’re interested in this sorta thing and learning more about it, click here.
