August 27th, 2008 | Random Literary Thesis of the Day
Read this and tell me what you think it means:
In this paper I want to argue that if we think through the consequences of the postmodern idea of the heteronomous origin of subjectivity in a consistent way, this can lead us to an understanding of subjectivity that should not beforehand be set aside as unfruitful for pedagogical theory and practice.

August 21st, 2008 | Bolt is officially awesome.

After breezing to a new world record and Olympic gold in the men’s 100m, Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt took a victory lap and conducted a television interview before his closest competitor finished the race.Realizing his lead was insurmountable with 20 meters remaining, Bolt stretched his arms out in celebration, then slowed to a trot before walking across the finish line. An exuberant Bolt savored the victory, blowing kisses to the crowd and pausing for photo ops as he gallivanted past his competition a second time.
Moments later during a trackside interview, Bolt admitted to feeling some pressure from the rest of the pack. “I thought [Trinidadian sprinter Richard] Thompson might make up some ground when I stopped to tie my shoe,” said Bolt, pausing to glance as the rest of the field reached the midway point of the race. “I’m hoping [fellow Jamaican] Asafa [Powell] will take silver, but right now it’s not looking good.”
Bolt, who ran the 100m as a way to “keep limber” for the 200m, was already looking forward to the longer race. “The 200 is definitely my favorite,” said Bolt. “If I stay focused and don’t get hurt, I should be able to sit down and catch the rest of it after I finish.”

Seriously, I cannot comprehend how someone can run 10 metres in ONE SECOND. What insanity. His dance at the end during his victory lap was absolutely hilarious though!!!! And that poor Spearman from the USA….thinking he got a medal and doing the rounds of victory lap with Bolt then getting told he got disqualified fro stepping over the line once. I would be so angry at myself!!
Anyway, classic quote right here: “”I’ve been dreaming of this since I was yea high,” Bolt said. “So it means a lot more to me actually than the 100 means.”"
Seriously - beats Phelp’s record I’m sorry to say

August 21st, 2008 | Is Cover Art dead?
In today’s Independent on Sunday legendary album cover designer Peter Saville has pronounced that album art “is dead.”
Saville is famous for the iconic artwork of New Order and Joy Division who he worked with extensively, he has also designed album covers for Pulp, Suede and Roxy Music.
“We have a social disaster on our hands,” he said, speaking from his studio this weekend, “The things that pop music was there to do for us have all been done… there’s nothing to rail against now.
“When I was 15, in the North-west of England … the record cover was like a picture window to another world. Seeing an Andy Warhol illustration on a Velvet Underground album was a revelation … It was the art of our generation … true pop art.”
But is Saville really only speaking for his generation? After all most 15 year olds in the North-west of England today won’t be aware that they’re missing out on Andy Warhol’s artwork, as it’s available to view in the mass media and on t-shirts in Afflecks Palace. The rate at which most 15 year olds in 2008 are consuming images in the media is beyond anything Saville would have dreamed of as a teenager in Manchester.
Is the artwork of bands to be consumed elsewhere, rather than packaged around a 12 inch disc of black plastic? Will classic album artwork of the future be all the surrounding marketing of an LP, its TV advert, its website, its promo videos?
Or will the 5cm squared artwork included on your iPod when you view the album details of your favourite tune be all there is left, a postage stamp size footnote of music history?

Hmm. Well I guess I can kinda see Peter’s point. I seriously doubt album art will ‘die’ anytime soon. I know some people who organize their music with coverflow. For me though, I find it way too slow … but its nice for reference. Album Art doesn’t necessarily have to be pointless either…I mean if its something for a Britney Spears album I might understand if no one really cared about the art, but I honestly got the Tool 10,000 Days album because the album art is awesome. Plus the lens just trips you OUT. So I guess if album art is to be in the future, artists need to get innovative. And creative. No more slapdash photoshop shite like this:

August 21st, 2008 | What is this world coming to…
…Blake Peebles, 16, of Raleigh, dropped out of school last year to devote himself to playing ‘Guitar Hero,’ and his parents agreed to have him home-schooled. ‘I usually play till I can’t anymore,’ Blake says.
Blake is the middle child of Mike and Hunter Peebles. Tucker is 18, an honor-roll student who plays football for North Raleigh Christian Academy. Caramy is 13, a dancer with a congenital disorder that causes developmental disabilities.
Mike and Hunter do not believe in one-size-fits-all parenting.
That is not to say that it was an easy decision for them to let Blake leave school last September. They would have preferred that he stay in high school with his brother. But he bugged them until they let him quit.
“We couldn’t take the complaining anymore,” says Hunter. “He always told me that he thought school was a waste of time.”
Blake never gravitated toward sports or drama or any of the other traditional school-based activities. Just gaming.

Okayyyy…..I honestly don’t know what to say about this article. I mean on one hand, if it’s something he wants to do then he should probably go for it. On the other hand…A PROFESSIONAL GUITAR HERO PLAYER?????!!!!?! Wow. Seriously, some guys just take Guitar Hero way too seriously. I mean, what’s the point in pressing plastic buttons? And how would you earn up to 80k a year playing frickin GUITAR HERO!?!?!? Maybe I just don’t understand the gaming industry here but geez….what a gamble huh.
I can’t believe his parents let him drop out of school too. He’s either extremely lucky…or extremely idiotic. “”We couldn’t take the complaining anymore,” says Hunter. “He always told me that he thought school was a waste of time.”" - now that is a classic quote right there. No wonder education is going downhill - just look at Miss Teen USA North Carolina!!!
Blake so far has won about $1,000 in prizes in the months since he began competing in “Guitar Hero.” His biggest challenge will come in mid-August, when father and son travel to California for the U.S. regionals of the World Cyber Games. Blake qualified to appear there after performing well online.
If Blakes wins the regional, it’s on to the national championship. The best “Guitar Hero III” players there will earn the right to represent the U.S. at the world tournament in Germany.
Ok. Well I suppose you can’t argue with that. I guess I just can’t believe you can actually earn that much money…just for being good at games. Why is it that all the pointless, inane ‘occupations‘, specifically in the entertainment industry, get piles and piles of money?? And the people who work their asses off in the office everyday that keep the economy afloat get paid meagre salaries??? Priorities are pretty sad in this world, imo.
And he’s officially going to be a bogan for the rest of his life xD
